Fireworks by Erika Pineda-Ghanny of The Ivory Hut

Dear Friends,

When Shauna first proposed the idea for #afundforjennie, we thought maybe we could help raise a decent amount of money for Jennie. We even dared put a figure to it. “It’d be nice if we could raise $25,000 for Jennie,” we said to ourselves. “It would be incredible if we could help do that for her.”

Well. You certainly showed us we need to learn a thing or two about dreaming big. Or big enough. We surpassed that in our last update, and later in this post you’ll find out just how far we left that number behind.

But first, we’d like to say thank you. All of you. We wish we could acknowledge each one of you for your donations and offerings of time and talent, but then this post would turn into a tome. As a token of our endless gratitude, and to let you feel a little of what we’ve accomplished together, we rounded up a few of our favorite moments from these past two weeks:

Gail Dosik from @THEToughCookie is a well-known cookie decorator extraordinaire, but now she can add auctioneer to her resume. If you recall her tweets, Gail worked her cookie auction to the very last minute, bringing in $500 for the fund and earning her the hashtag #gailsgavel.

To prove that just about anything can happen on Twitter, we need to give a nod to the impromptu tweet-based auction from none other than Chris and Karen of @thepeche, who raised $201 for this ridiculous photo. The back story would take too long to explain, but thank you to @debpuchalla for egging them on and then actually buying the priceless photo.

One of our favorite “awww” moments took place on the ThreeManyCooks auction when Jessica, who also recently lost her husband, invited a co-bidder to share her prize. She commented: “Marilyn, if I win you can come! Bring a friend as well. This is all for a good cause, and I would love to make new friends out of it. I just lost my husband a few weeks ago to the same thing. I can imagine what she is going through and I want to help out as much as I can!” This is how community is built: opening your hearts up to people you don’t know.

Another one of our favorite auctions was made possible by the amazing team effort put forth by @MikeVFMK, @DomenicaCooks, @nella22, and @littlekitchn. They helped amass over 60 cookbooks to create one heck of a collection for their auction. And they did it slowly, one tweet at a time. A big thank you to all the cookbook authors who generously donated their books and even agreed to pay shipping!

Karen had a small Etsy shop but was so moved by Jennie’s loss that she made Hope and Joy dishcloths with Jennie in mind. She asked us to host her auction because she didn’t own a blog. After her auction closed, she wrote us that the experience: “… has inspired me to create a blog with my husband’s help. So next time I can help you with a cause I can host it on my own blog! I’m just a small corner of the web but maybe as my business grows I can be of some service. Thanks again for your letting me be a part of this. It was a wonderful feeling to lend a hand.”

We loved when Sara Kate decided to accept her TWO highest bids, “doubling down,” she called it. She doubled her money for Jennie and invited others to do the same.

These were just a few moments of so many and we’re certain there are many others we didn’t see. You all were too, too much.

And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for. Here is the grand total that you made possible:

$63,525.20

We say grand total because today is the end of this campaign, but money is still coming in. (If you’d still like to make a contribution to #afundforjennie, you can still use our donate button and indicate that you’d like the funds to go toward #afundforjennie.) We’ll do another post in a couple weeks to let you know the final tally.

As our way of thanking you for being the most fabulous community of bloggers and readers out there, we’re hosting a giveaway, courtesy of KitchenAid, who has this to say: “On behalf of KitchenAid, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Jennie Perillo and her two young daughters for their loss of a husband and father, Mikey. We have been truly moved by the outpouring of love and support for Jennie from the food blogging community in the weeks following Mikey’s passing, and we are honored to take part in A Fund for Jennie. We hope these prizes will encourage you all to get into the kitchen and create something wonderful for the people you love, just as everyone who made A Pie for Mikey did. Our thoughts are with Jennie and her family during this difficult time.”

If you held an auction or donated to the #afundforjennie campaign, you are eligible to enter this KitchenAid giveaway for a 7-quart stand stand mixer, a 13-quart food processor and a 5-speed hand mixer—all brand new to the KitchenAid line! There will be 3 winners.

BWOB KitchenAid giveaway

We’ll make this simple since you already did so much to support us. Just leave a comment saying hey, howdy or hello. That’s it! Or, if you’re in a sharing mood, tell us what you loved most about this campaign or relate any of your favorite moments. We want to hear as much of the good stuff as we can.

Once more, thank you for everything you’ve done. You made this campaign a success beyond our wildest dreams. You did this. And so we applaud you.

(You can’t see it right now, but we’re giving you all a standing ovation.)

As we wrap up our inaugural campaign, we’re already thinking about our next project, encouraged by the sea of kindness in this community that we love so dearly. We hope you’ll continue to be with us and join us as we forge ahead.

Yours for good,

Bloggers Without Borders

Entries will be collected after 11:59PM EST on Monday, September 5. Winners will be notified on Tuesday, September 6.

  47. Julia says:

I am so moved and encouraged by the amazing food blogging community. Really, you guys are freaking THE BEST!!!

  48. Anne says:

After reading Jennie’s emotional post about Mikey I just had to help. I was introduced to this amazing fund by my friend Lynn at http://www.goodiesforgifts.com. I immediately thought Mikey’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Cake Pops! And so, together we raised $150.00 for Jennie.

I have two small children as well and have NO idea what I would do without my incredible husband. He does not have the type of job that would exist if he were not here. No pension. No 401K. This is actually one of the reasons I started this cake pop business.

We were so happy to be a part of this cause (and many to come). With that said, a Kitchen Aid mixer would be INCREDIBLE! Our business is growing and growing so this would be a HUGE help!

Best of luck to all! We’re happy to be a part of such a wonderful group!

  49. What a loving & caring community the food bloggers world is, and I’m so proud to be a part of it. We all openend our hearts generously, unconditionally and without hesitation…for Jennie and her girls….and the giving continues….with our pots, pans, whisks, aprons, brushes, hands and hearts.

  50. I’m getting goosbumps right now from reading that post. It is an amazing thing when people pull together to help each other out. I am new to this community but am proud to be a part of it. My family was touched by the selflessness of it. In fact we’ve decided to pick out some charities and auction off some handmade stuff with 100% of the proceeds going to it a couple of times a year now. Thank you for putting together a place where we could help. xoxo

  51. Incredible, so moving to see all of these good people pull together to help a friend. I’m very proud of this amazing community. A big thank you to BWOB for bringing us all together in such a special way.

  52. Rebecca says:

What an amazing, generous, loving, tender, forceful community — I’m so in awe of all of you for doing this special thing for Jennie and her girls. In the worst moments of someone’s life, all it takes is for people to step up and give just a little to help show that life can still be beautiful and worthwhile. <3

  53. Katherine says:

Jennie’s courage to allow all to be with her, in e-spirit, during such a private time allowed us all to reflect on our own experiences and relationships. I can only hope I carry her level of class and abundance of love. I will continue to send healing thoughts to her, their daughters, family and friends.

  54. Kimberly says:

Wow! This is so awesome. It is so heartwarming to see people across the globe showing such love and concern.

  57. kelly says:

I’ve been watching the blogs and tweets and knew it had to be going well but never imagined it would have added up to this! My heart aches for Jennie and the kids but I pray that this effort somehow helps make her financial struggle a bit easier and to know that she is surrounded by love and support with such an incredible response sure has renewed my faith in mankind!

I’m so glad to be part of this fund raising effort. The joy and positive energy that vibrate throughout the internet is magnificent.

I know Jennie’s situation more than I would like to. I was so touched to see a community come together to help another widow! God Bless, and all the best to Jennie & her kids!

  60. Krista says:

    What a wonderful tribute!

  61. Elizabeth says:

I am so ridiculously proud to be a part of this amazing community. It’s just amazing to see people who’ve never met, who’s only initial connection is based on a primal love for all things food and drink, come together to do something brilliant for one of our peers.

I can only hope that we continue to bring this kind of community feel to everything we do as bloggers.

Extraordinary team effort by people running auctions and the folks who did all the bidding and buying. And the spontaneous offering by @thepeche was incredible!
Oh, btw..I’m getting a holster for my gavel.

  72. Julie says:

I was absolutely heartened to see such an outpouring of support from so many diverse folks from near and far. To paraphrase Margaret Mead “Never doubt that a large group of thoughtful, committed food bloggers can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has…” Thanks for spearheading this campaign and my thoughts and good wishes go out to the Perillo Girls.

  111. SMITH BITES says:

standing O for the team of people who put this thing together and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep it all moving: Maggy, Erika, Shauna, Aimee and the many others who worked on the site frantically to make it all happen . . . i am so very humbled to call you friends. besides my marriage to The Professor, THIS has been one of the greatest experiences of my life

  112. A says:

As a food blog reader, in addition to helping someone in need (three someones, actually), one of the greatest things about this effort is that I found so many new sources of inspiration and information. I have collected about 10 recipes for my family, chutney is coming my way, and I’m going to learn how to cook a healthy meal for my family. And if I’m lucky, one more sweet treat will come my way. This was a win win for everyone – for Jennie, for the bloggers who donated and who purchased, for readers who commented and donated and purchased and learned of so many new sources, for readers and shoppers who will have special tastes coming their way, and for everyone who had the opportunity to feel that they were supporting a family that needed some comfort.

  113. JenniferA says:

Fantastic. I was initially shy to have my own auction because I was afraid no one would bid. I am so humbled by the generosity of this community. Thank you again, bidder – I’ll try to make your cookies worth every penny!

  114. Wow! This was an extraordinary effort of love, generosity and community. And, a smashing success. This means Jennie’s & the girl’s immediate future is much more secure–what better gift could they receive exactly when they need it most? Well done.

  115. Amy H says:

I am not a blogger and until recently wasn’t much of a blog reader either until I started using Zite and came across Jennie’s story, which through following has introduced me to many wonderful blogs. The support has been awe inspiring and simply put makes me smile.

  145. It’s been such a pleasure watching this unfold! Congrats to everyone who worked hard on the fund. The 25 “winners” of my cookie auction have been an absolute delight. And the privilege of meeting them never would have happened without this organization.

Can’t wait to see what you do next!

  150. Karen says:

I feel thrilled to be a part of something bigger than myself. To be able to lend my small talent to help another was so fun and rewarding at the same time. I was just glad people bid on my offering!! I love to cook and be in my kitchen and a stand mixer has always been my dream. As well as the blender. It seems like those two tools no kitchen should lack. Thank you for doing this for all of us!!

  151. Christine says:

What an amazing thing! I’m so happy my modest donation went towards something so much greater. And seriously, every time I read the comments from Three Many Cooks and Jessica’s in particular I get a little misty.

  152. Wendy T says:

I loved, applauded and participated in the sense of community.

The energy was contagious, and I hope it’s enough to fill up Jennie’s reserve tank for the times she’ll need that boost in the upcoming months.

Kudos to everyone. Job well done.

  153. Anna DuDash says:

Sitting here crying because this has so deeply touched my heart. “One “small” step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

    God-bless you all.

  154. Paula says:

For anyone who will ever ask me *Why should I start a blog or why should I join Twitter?* I’m simply going to tell them to read this.

So very proud of all of you behind BWOB and everyone who helped to make every little bit add up to this astounding amount! I’m so blessed to be a part of this caring community.

  155. Dangrdafne says:

I am speechless. I am so glad I was able to donate to this amazing cause. It is incredible what a group of people can accomplish when they put their hearts into something. Thank you to everyone who put this all together and for each donation made. My heart is full.

  156. YAY! I’m so proud of the whole blogging community for this campaign. Though I’m late with my auction and late commenting on this, I don’t care. What everyone has done is nothing short of amazing.

  157. Congratulations on a job very well done, all.

  158. helen says:

I have to tell you, we are speechless how wonderful this whole community has been to pitch in. Thank you for taking the time to help a #workmom in her hour of need.

  159. Diana says:

Wow, I finally stopped by to check out the total and just started crying. That is absolutely mind blowing! I love this crazy blogging community!

  160. Lisa D says:

Is there a breakdown of what our donations went to/are going to? According to Jennie herself, it doesn’t seem to be for its original intent (mortgage) since she is moving out of her house. I donated a significant sum (for me), but I feel like now I am not sure where it went.

  161. kathy_h says:

Just wondering if there were any updates on this … so fantastic to know the community raised so much money for poor Jennifer and her girls. Have they been able to save their housing and healthcare situation??

  162. Petunia says:

Current circumstances have led me to believe that this blogger’s financial situation has been grossly and deliberately misrepresented, in particular by Shauna Ahern. I am sorry to say that I am very disappointed in this endeavor and I will not be donating to BWOB projects again.

  163. shauntal says:

There’s been a bit of confusion as to Jennifer’s actual neediness. Can you provide more info on her financial situation and what she plans to do with the money that was donated? Thank you!
